Power Decides First – Energy, Geopolitics, and the Global Asymmetry That Shapes Africa’s Future
For a long time, we told ourselves a comforting story about the world.
- That Globalization had Softened Power.
- That Rules had Replaced Force.
- That Markets rewarded Efficiency more than Strength.
That Story is Over.
What we are witnessing today is not Disorder. It is Reversion. A return to a world where Energy, Leverage, and Strategic Position matter more than rhetoric. Where Cooperation exists, but only where Power allows it.
This is not a Moral Judgment. It is a description of reality.
The World Has Not Become Chaotic — It Has Become Honest
From Energy sanctions to Supply-Chain disruptions, from Currency Weaponization to Technology Embargoes, Global Politics has revealed its underlying logic again:
- Power Decides First.
- Rules Follow Second.
The language may still be Diplomatic, but the Behaviour is Strategic.
Energy routes are contested.
Critical minerals are guarded.
Trade is conditional.
Security guarantees are transactional.
This is not a failure of international institutions. It is their Limit.
I Strongly Believe that Asymmetry Is the Real Currency of the Global System – The global system is not Divided between Good and Bad actors. It is divided between Rule-Makers and Rule-Takers.
Some Countries:
- Set Prices
- Set Prices
- Control Standards
- Issue Reserve Currencies and…
- Dominate Technology Platforms
Others:
- Export Raw Material
- Import Finished Goods
- Borrow in Foreign Currency and…
- Absorb Volatility
This Asymmetry is not Accidental. It is Structural.
Energy sits at the Center of it.
Those who control Energy Sources, Processing Capacity, Transport Routes, and Financing Instruments shape Outcomes. Those who do not, remained exposed regardless of intent or morality.
Africa’s Position: Rich, Strategic, and Exposed
Africa is often described as “Emerging,” “Rising,” or “Full of Potential.”
Those phrases are emotionally comforting and analytically empty.
A more accurate description is this:
Africa is Strategically Important and Structurally Vulnerable.
The continent holds:
- Vast Energy Resources
- Critical Minerals for the Green Transition
- A Young Population and a…
- Growing Geopolitical Relevance
Yet it remains:
- Energy Insecure
- Under-Industrialized
- Dependent on External Financing and…
- Dependent on External Financing and…
- Exposed to Price-Taking Dynamics
This is not a failure of ambition. It is the consequence of entering a power-driven global system without sufficient leverage.
In My Opinion, Energy Is Not a Sector — It Is Sovereignty
Energy policy is often discussed as an industry issue.
That I believe is a mistake.
Energy However, Determines:
- Industrial Capacity
- Fiscal Stability
- Geopolitical Bargaining Power and…
- National Security
Countries that Export Raw Energy without processing Remain Dependent. Countries that Import Energy without diversification Remain Fragile. Countries that Fail to Build Skills alongside resources Remain Exposed.
In a world reorganizing around Energy Security, Neutrality is not Safety. It is Invisibility.
Namibia: Strategic Opportunity, Strategic Risk
As we all know by now that, Namibia occupies a unique position in this reality.
It is not a Major Power.
It is not a Marginal State.
It sits at a Strategic Intersection:
- Uranium
- Offshore Gas
- Green Hydrogen Ambition
- Port Access and…
- Political Stability
This combination Attracts Attention, not Partnership by Default.
In a Power-Driven System, Interest is Rarely Altruistic.
The Question is NOT whether Namibia will be Noticed.
It Already Is.
The Question is whether it will Negotiate from Clarity or Dependency.
Why Leadership Matters More Than Ever – This is where I believe leadership becomes decisive.
As Prof. Wiseman Nkuhlu has repeatedly emphasized, Leadership is NOT about Authority. It is actually about Purpose Under Pressure.
In an Asymmetric Global System:
- Short-Term Gains are Easy
- Long-Term Positioning is Hard and…
- Institutional Strength Matters more than Deals
Purpose here is not Idealism. It is Orientation. It is the Ability to Say:
- What Kind of Economy is Being Built
- What Kind of Institutions Must Endure
- What Trade-Offs are Acceptable and…
- What Dependencies are Not
Without that Clarity, Strategy becomes Reactive.
Why This Matters Beyond Politics – Because This is NOT Only a Political Issue.
- Shareholders – Should Care because Geopolitical Exposure Affects Valuation, Cost of Capital, and Long-Term Returns.
- Boards – Should Care because Strategic Risk no longer Sits Outside the Organization.
- Executives – Should Care because Operational Excellence Cannot Compensate for Systemic Exposure.
- Managers – Should Care because Instability Eventually reaches the Shop Floor. And…
- Ordinary Citizens – Should Care because Energy, Prices, Employment, and Opportunity are all Downstream of these Dynamics.
And Here is The Hard Truth…
The Global System does not punish Countries for being Moral.
It Ignores Countries that are Irrelevant.
Therefore, Relevance is Built Through:
- Capability
- Coherence
- Institutional Strength
- Strategic Clarity
Geopolitics Does NOT, wait for readiness.
It Exploits Weakness.
What Comes Next
This article sets the external reality.
The next Question is Internal:
- If Power is Real, Asymmetry is Structural, and Energy is Strategic — How should Institutions be Governed?
Because Navigating a Power-Driven world requires more than Ambition.
It requires Governance that can make Hard Decisions without hiding behind Documents.
That is where the real test begins.
Please note:
I don’t think for one second that my account is a definitive account. I offer it no more than an opening round in a conversation that I hope you will join in.
